A chimpanzee “adopted” and helped raise two white tiger cubs in 2008.
The two cubs had become separated from their mother after a hurricane flooded their sanctuary.
As reported by Primatology.net:
“The story behind the adoption revolves around Anjana’s caregiver, China York, and the bond they share. China raised Anjana and Anjana has mimicked her human caregiver in caring for other animals at the institute, such as the new born white tiger cubs.”
The Daily Mail quoted Dr Bhagavan, founder of TIGERS:
“Anjana has been with China, side by side, ever since she was born and has joined her in caring and raising baby animals.
“So she helped her and acted as a surrogate mother to these animals and she has done these same with these baby white tigers.
“She gives them a bottle, lies with them and acts as a surrogate mother. She has a close contact and bond and gives them a nurturing.”
